Introduction

INTERSTATE trainers have enjoyed much success during Tasmania's major carnivals over the years but since the advent of the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival more and more of the best mentors interstate have targeted the state in search of Group and Listed success.

The 2010 AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival is again expected to boast a strong contingent of interstate invaders.

Prior to AAMI assuming the naming rights of the state's four-week carnival, only a few interstate trainers made the Bass Strait crossing with horses aimed at the AAMI Hobart and Launceston Cups or the Cadbury Tasmanian Derby. With the Carnival now staged over five weeks during January-February, due to the movement of the Tasmania derby meeting, with over $2 million in prize money up for grabs, more interstate trainers and owners are being lured to Tasmania for what is rapidly becoming one of the best carnivals of its type on the national racing calendar.

The 2007 Carnival was bolstered by the introduction of owner and trainer incentive bonuses and major stakes increases to some races, including the Swettenham Stud Bow Mistress Stakes, a weight-for-age race for fillies and mares run over 1200m on Derby Day.
The Swettenham Stud Bow Mistress carries prize money of $80,000 plus a 2010 service nomination to a selection of stallions with the winner and minor placegetters in the feature race to be the recipients of the service nominations.

Interstate trainers likely to nominate horses for races during the 2010 Carnival include David Hayes who tasted much success in 2007, winning the Tasmanian Oaks with Maha Chakri while his 2YO filly Extension Of Time won the $100,000 Magic Millions Classic.

Lee Freedman, who tasted success in 2009 with Mrs Kipling in the 2YO Motors SAAB Elwick Stakes and with Rock The Moment in the $150,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes, whiule another Victorian trainer Clinton McDonald prepared Bombay Sling to win the $100,000 Magic Million Classic.

Victorian trainer Darren Weir won his third AAMI HObart Cup in 2009 with Gotta Keep Cool defeating Zavite by a lip but that hortse tuerned the tables in the AAMI Launceston Cup to give NSW trainer Anthony Cummings his fuirst taste of success in a major cup in Tasmania

Weir, Freedman, McDonald, Colin Little, Peter Moody, Gai Waterhouse, Leon Macdonald, Michael Moroney, Tony Vasil and Chris Hyland all are expected to nominate horses for the upcoming carnival.
